Protein powder is the most popular supplement within the fitness industry yet there is still so much confusion around it. Some people are still unsure if they should be taking it, while some just aren't sure what it is. In a nutshell it’s just an easily digestible source of protein in supplement form. It’s no different to taking a multi vitamin in that it should only supplement your diet. You should still aim to get the majority if not all of your protein from food.
No matter what your goal is within your training protein plays a huge part and you should be making sure you get enough protein in your diet. Here are 5 reasons you should consider taking protein powder.
1. You don't eat enough protein
This nearly always the case with most clients I meet. You should be aiming for 1g of protein for every pound of bodyweight as a rough estimate. For example a 150lb male should aim for around about 150g of protein a day.
2. Protein powder is convenient
The way life is nowadays convenience is very important. Many people eat on the go or don’t have a lot of time so a protein powder supplement is very convenient.
3. It’s harder to get enough protein on the move
Similarly to the above if you are out and about it can be quite a challenge getting enough protein in. Having some protein powder can provide you with a good amount of protein while you are on the move.
4. It can be an inexpensive source of protein
Sources of protein are generally more expensive than other food types. Things like chicken, beef and fish are generally more expensive than rice, pasta and bread. However you can buy a decent protein powder for as little as 25p a serving.
5. It can be used in so many different ways
You don't just have to drink your protein powder in a shake. You can add it to yoghurts, smoothies, oats and you can even bake with it – pancakes, cakes and bread just to name a few. Be creative!
