When I say progress on those exercises I mean learn how to execute them in their simplest form. For example if you are learning how to perform the back squat using a barbell, learn how to do do multiple sets of 5-8 reps with good form and get stronger at that.
In my opinion it makes no sense trying to learn how to squat or bench with bands and chains if you cannot perform quality reps with the equivalent of your body weight or more on the bar. All you are doing is making a movement you are already trying to learn a lot more difficult. Your focus has gone from learning the movement to just trying to move the weight which is completely different.
Although I refer to these exercises as the basics that doesn't mean they are simple. Increasing weight, reps and tempo are very easy ways to make these exercises more difficult at the appropriate time. As well as this the majority of people will have mobility issues making some, if not all of these exercises challenging.
The closing point of this post is still learn and perform the basics but don't over complicate them.
