In this life we generally want things straight away, we don’t want to wait. Unfortunately, when it comes to physique and fitness related goals a little more patience is required. Sometimes you have to accept you may need to take 1 step backwards to move forwards.
When I came back from a hip injury, having not done any squats for 4 months, it was quite humbling starting back at 60kg. The last time I had squatted I did 175kg for 7 reps. I had to take a number of steps backwards to move forwards. I had to really work on my mobility, and I also had to work on my technique which meant reducing the weight significantly. 4 months later, I have a new 1 rep max and I am handling heavier loads for more reps than before my injury. Whilst at the time it felt like steps backwards I now look at it as a move forward. I have better mobility, better technique and I lift more.
When it comes to physique changes sometimes the same thing applies. It is not uncommon for me to get my fat loss clients eating more food before they start dieting. It may (very rarely) lead to a small amount of body fat increase but ultimately it sets them up for a smoother fat loss journey. Again you could argue this is 1 step backwards to move forward. However, I see it as steps forward. Better metabolism, better insulin responses and more energy are just some of the benefits I've observed doing this with clients.
Things can’t always be instantaneous. Your goals can’t always be a straight line, you still need to persevere, keep at it and think of the bigger picture.
